The Prep has an exceptional reputation in junior chess and is currently the holder of major national and regional titles.Chess Club from the Annex to the Upper School is run by Mr Alan Norris, a former Scottish Champion, and parents help with organising team events.

DCPS wins English Primary Schools Chess Championships
The DCPS Under 11 A chess team won the Finals of the English Primary Schools Chess Championships on Friday 29 June at Brean Sands in Somerset. DCPS has had prize-winning teams in the National Finals for several years, but this was the first time that the U11s have been crowned champions. Baven, Eugene, Nicholas, John, Orlando and William played seven rounds of high-quality chess over two days and fully deserved the championship title.
The Under 11 B team and the Under 9 A team also played exceptionally well this year, winning through to the National Semi-Finals in Hemsby, Norfolk in mid June. In addition to the above boys, Arthur, Christopher, Motoy, Zack, Robert, Oliver, Simon, John, Kallon and John James should all be congratulated.
DCPS comes top of Kent Schools Chess Grand Prix
Boys in Years 3-8 have competed regularly in the Kent Schools Chess Grand Prix. There have been many individual successes in all age groups, and DCPS has often come home with the team award. On Sunday 1st July the DCPS team of Dunstan, Baven, Eugene, Nicholas, Oliver, Simon and Xavier were presented with the trophy for Best U13 Team for the whole season. This is the third successive year that DCPS has held this title.
DCPS wins IAPS Chess Championships
A team of 12 Prep boys spent 3 days of their Easter holidays at the IAPS Chess Championship at Aldro School in Surrey. The Years 5, 6 and 7 boys were victorious in the Under 13 section for the second year running and were reawarded the Hodgson Cup, beating strong teams from around the country.
3 “Internationals” at DCPS
The school is proud to have three “internationals”. Baven (Yr 6) and Nicholas (Yr 5) have joined Dunstan (Yr 8) as members of the England junior chess team. Matches so far this season have included wins for England against Wales and Holland.
