Chess At the Prep
The Prep has an exceptional reputation in junior chess. Boys play in Chess Club at school, in local tournaments organised by the Kent Junior Chess Association (KJCA) and in school teams in the English Primary Schools Chess Association (EPSCA) Championship. The Prep regularly wins the KJCA “Best School” prize. In 2005 the Under 9 team came 2nd in the EPSCA Championship and in 2006 the Under 11 team came 3rd. The school is proud to have an “international”: Dunstan Rodrigues (Yr 8) is a member of the England junior chess squad.
THE PREP WINS IAPS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2007
A team of 12 Prep boys spent 3 days of their Easter holidays at the IAPS Chess Championship at Aldro School in Surrey. The Years 5, 6 and 7 boys were victorious in the Under 13 section for the second year running. Nicholas Clanchy (5M) came joint First in the Championship with Ramsay Pyper (Windlesham School).
THE PREP WINS KENT “BEST SCHOOL” PRIZE
At the annual Dulwich junior chess tournament held at the College on 6 March 2007 (part of the Kent “Grand Prix”) the Prep was awarded “Best School” prize, reflecting excellent performances from a number of players. Dunstan Rodrigues (Yr 8) came 2nd= in the Under 18 section, Eugene Daley (5M) was 1st= in the Under 14 Section and Nicholas Clanchy (5M) was 1st and Orlando Devoy (5M) 3rd= in the Under 11 Section. Prizes were awarded by the local MP and Minister for Culture, Media and Sport, the Rt. Hon. Tessa Jowell MP.
THE PREP U9 AND U11 TEAMS QUALIFY IN COUNTY AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The U11 A and B teams and U9 A team have all qualified for the semi-finals of the English Primary Schools Chess Association (EPSCA) Championships to be held at Pontins holiday camp at Hemsby, Norfolk, on 15-17 June 2007. The Prep U11 A team has also qualified for the Finals of the Kent Primary Schools Championship to be held in the summer term.
BAVEN BALENDRAN WINS ENGLAND UNDER 11 CHAMPIONSHIP
3 Prep boys travelled to Nottingham for the England Under 11 Championship on 14 and 15 October 2006. The tournament was won by Baven Balendran (6J) and fellow Kent player Jasdeep Gahir (Whitgift School).
