About the Headmaster

Mr Michael Roulston took over as Headmaster from April 2009. Here is a mini biography taken from the letter written by the Chairman of Governors announcing his appointment.

Michael is 52 years of age, is married to Janet and has three children. He holds a degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in education from Ulster. Michael comes to us from Cranleigh Preparatory School in Surrey where he was Headmaster for eight years. Under his leadership the school has prospered. Year on year increasing numbers of scholarships have been awarded to an array of the best public schools and enrolment has risen dramatically.

Prior to Cranleigh, Michael’s career as a headmaster commenced, in 1986, at The Model School in Northern Ireland. During this difficult period of unrest, Michael established The Model in Londonderry as an informally religiously 'integrated' school and it was duly recognised as leading the educational field in conflict resolution studies through the award, in 1994, of the prestigious B.P.Gulbenkian Citizenship Award for Northern Ireland.

Subsequently Michael moved to The British School in Tokyo as headmaster. There he managed a major re-build of the facility and saw the school re-positioned as the No.1 school of choice for British parents in Japan. He was awarded an MBE in the 2000 New Years Honours for 'contribution to The British School in Tokyo and to British education in Japan’.

Your Governors are excited by the prospect of Michael building on the academic and physical infrastructure of the School and on the ethos and reputation established by George and we look forward to him joining us for the Summer term 2009.
