Design Technology
Design and Technology is a systematic activity and pupils are taught a process which is reinforced throughout the Lower School.
This system allows children to design and make within a specific setting known as a capability task.
eg Design a photo frame for a gift.
It must a) be stable, b) hold the photo, c) look attractive.
From this starting point boys will be encouraged to:
1. Generate realistic design ideas
2. Clarify these ideas with their teacher and suggest ways forward when they
encounter difficulties.
By the end of their time in the Lower School it will be hoped that the boys will be able to communicate their designs using detailed labelled sketches.
Each class will work on one capability task a term. These may be prompted by:
a) imaginative work
b) class topic work
c) the investigation of simple products
Boys will make their designs from a variety of resistant and non-resistant materials
eg wood, reclaimed materials and textiles.
The programme of study in each year group includes work with textiles, mechanisms and structures.
