Learning Support
Learning support is offered throughout the school. Boys are either supported within the classroom or are taught in small groups within the Learning Support Department. Individual sessions are also arranged where appropriate.
Currently there are two full-time and three part-time members of staff in the department. Learning support staff work closely with subject and form tutors to ensure that appropriate provision is in place. Curriculum subjects covered include reading, spelling and maths.
There are established links with outside agencies e.g. Educational Psychologists and Speech Therapists.
Annexe and Lower School
Lessons within the department last about 35 minutes, with the emphasis on reinforcing spellings from the weekly spelling lists and revising spelling patterns from earlier years. Members of the department also help with reading.
If it is thought that a child needs extra help, tuition is arranged with the Learning Support Department. Mainly, lessons are arranged after consultation with the class teacher at the beginning of the academic year but they can begin at any time during the year and parents are fully informed.
Upper school
Boys with specific learning difficulties, as diagnosed by an Educational Psychologist, are offered small group lessons to develop their comprehension, creative writing and study skills. Individual lessons are also arranged where appropriate.
If a teacher or parent is concerned about a child’s progress, the Learning Support Department will investigate and if appropriate assess the child. Parents are fully informed of the outcome and discussions will take place about whether an assessment by an Educational Psychologist is necessary.
Study skills courses also take place in Years 5 and 7.
The Learning Support Department also monitor the use of laptops. See Attached Policy.
