Mathematics

The Lower School staff is committed to helping each boy to enjoy working with numbers, grow in understanding and increase his knowledge of a variety of different mathematical concepts.

During the Lower School years, mathematics work follows the guidelines offered by the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2. These guidelines consist of:

  1. Numbers and algebra
  2. Shape, space and measures
  3. Handling Data

The lessons will involve consolidation, extension and the introduction of new concepts. Timetabling allows every class to have some periods led by two members of staff. Much of the practical, investigative work takes place in our Maths Workshop. Here boys learn to organise themselves, work from cards and begin to take more responsibility for their learning. Boys in Year 4 are taught in sets which are selected from across the year group enabling them to work more directly with others working at a similar pace. In this way it is hoped that they can be helped as effectively as possible.
