Music (Classroom)

Year 3

One period a week is devoted to practical training mainly involving the learning of the recorder which develops an understanding of rhythm and musical notation.   Each class is divided into groups so that boys can learn at their own pace, and according to their previous experience. Boys will require a recorder. These can be purchased inexpensively at most music outlets. We recommend the standard Yamaha descant recorder. A second period is used for singing, playing simple percussion accompaniments, musical appreciation and simple aural training. There is also an opportunity to look at, and listen to, some orchestral instruments.

Year 4

There is one period of music each week with the emphasis being on use of classroom percussion, singing and musical appreciation.   This may be on a particular theme (sometimes linked with class topic work) e.g. - The Sea, Ballet, descriptive music, etc. There will also be opportunities for the boys to provide their own percussion accompaniments to songs, for simple improvisations and for listening to music. Simple aural work will also be continued. Boys will also make use of electronic keyboards and begin simple composition. There is also a weekly congregational practice. The aim is that boys enjoy their music.
