Physical Education

The Physical Education programme for boys in the Lower School aims to provide a wide range of educational experiences.   Individual skills are taught and used to develop co-ordination, flexibility, strength and stamina.   Teamwork and tactics are also developed, encouraging responsibility and co-operation.   We also try to develop the aesthetic appreciation of movement.   Competition and the positive aspects of competing also form an important part of the learning process.

The activities used to meet these ends range from rugby, soccer, cricket, athletics and swimming through hockey, basketball and short tennis to gymnastics. There is also an opportunity for the boys to do karate as an extra-curricular activity.

Each week the boys have one 35 minute PE lesson, based at the school using either the gym or the playground areas, two 70 minute games lessons which take place at one of our three games fields and one 35 minute swimming lesson

Boys may be invited to join a squad for those who display an aptitude for a particular sport. This is especially true in swimming where there are squad training sessions and a number of inter-school matches. The weaker swimmers will join a stroke improvement class during a lunch break.

There are four major sporting events in the Lower School calendar in which all boys take part and to which spectators are invited. These are the athletics’ sports day, the swimming sports, both of which are held in the summer term, the Year 4 mini-rugby festival and the Year 4 soccer festival.
