HISTORY

The aims of teaching History in the Lower School are to give children a sense of chronology and to introduce them to the skills and methods involved in understanding and interpreting the past.

They will find out about people and events from recent and more distant times and learn about different aspects of Local, British, European and World History, considering why things happened and changed and with what results. In Year 3 they will study the Tudors, Ancient Egypt and the Romans, Saxons or Vikings. In Year 4 they will learn about the Ancient Greeks and Britain Since 1930 as well as examining aspects of Local History.

Many varying sources of information are used, such as books, websites, videos and artefacts as well as visits to museums and historic sites. Links across the curriculum are made wherever possible.

GEOGRAPHY
The Geography covered in the Lower School follows on from work done in the Annexe. It begins the Key Stage 2 tasks which are continued in the Upper School.

The aim is to develop the pupils’ awareness of their surroundings and to begin to appreciate the relationship between physical and human geographical conditions. Boys are also encouraged to be aware of current events world wide, and identify on maps and globes where they are happening. Use of maps and plans on varying scales and of signs, symbols and geographical language is developed during the two years.

In Year 3 the boys will examine Weather and Holidays Around the World, Coasts and Traffic and in Year 4 they will do a local environmental study as well as looking further afield at a contrasting locality.
